Degenerative Disc Disease (“DDD”) is a common cause of low back pain and neck pain treated at the Orthopaedic Therapy Clinic. The disc functions as an important biomechanical shock absorber between the spinal bones.

DDD involves a wear and tear type process where the disc “ages” as we get older, losing its ability to withstand loading and guide movement. This aging process can occur silently without symptoms or it may become painful with or without a specific aggravating event. Typically back pain or neck pain and stiffness are experienced.

Physiotherapy treatment initially focuses on strategies for symptomatic relief followed by progression of flexibility and strengthening exercise once pain control has been achieved to maintain and restore physical function. Education also plays an important role in treatment in order to give you the tools to manage these conditions.
