How can it help me?
Kinesiology is the science of human movement and its application to improve function, health and performance. At the Orthopaedic Therapy Clinic Inc., we use Kinesiology to help you in these important ways:
- Developing therapeutic fitness programs to maintain your fitness when you are recovering from an injury
- Helping you to manage the side-effects of cancer-related treatments
- Reducing your risk for re-injury
- Improving the quality of life when exercise is recommended to improve the effectiveness of your medical care i.e. high blood pressure, obesity, arthritis, etc.
- Assisting you in your regaining your activity after surgery.
When should I see a Kinesiologist?
We recommend Kinesiology when you’ve been injured and haven’t been able to regain your active lifestyle without fear of re-injuring or when you’re returning to training after an injury or illness. We focus on the prevention of re-injury through applying our Therapeutic Fitness approach to help you regain strength, endurance and flexibility; and then teach you to apply these changes to restore efficient movement in your sports and everyday life.
We will work with your physician to apply the principles of Exercise Is Medicine in disease management. Many people with chronic conditions and diseases are known to attain a better quality of life when an appropriate fitness program is incorporated into their treatment plan. Our programs are age-appropriate and condition-appropriate. We help you to maintain your independence and prevent disease through all stages of your life is one of our top goals.
Who will I see?
At the Orthopaedic Therapy Clinic these services are only provided by Registered Kinesiologists. Recent changes to health legislation in Ontario have recognized Kinesiology as a regulated health profession. Our therapists have not only completed a recognized University degree in the science of human movement and its application to improve function, health and performance, but also meet the strict education and experience requirements of the College of Kinesiologists of Ontario.
Our Kinesiologists have extensive experience in injury reconditioning, cardiac rehabilitation and more. They have studied how physical activity influences the heart and lungs, hormonal systems, bones, joints and muscles. They have many designations including a certification in the CancerSmart Exercise for Fitness Professionals training program offered by Wellspring.
What can I expect at my appointment?
At your first appointment, we’ll evaluate your needs based on scientifically accepted standards. We may communicate with your other health professionals for a clearer picture of your fitness needs and restrictions. Together, we’ll discuss the results of your assessment and design a tailored exercise program, provide counseling and lifestyle advice and offer regular or periodic supervision of your exercises.
Your initial Kinesiology session lasts one hour and may include fitness testing as well as program design. Follow-up appointments may be booked for either 30 minutes or one hour depending on your specific goals and your fitness needs. We can work with you on a regular basis in our clinic, at your home or design an independent fitness program tailored to help you achieve your goals.
What should I wear?
You should wear comfortable clothes that allow you to move freely. It is ideal to bring running shoes or good walking shoes to maximize the effectiveness of your session.
Is Kinesiology covered under OHIP or my Extended Health Insurance?
Kinesiology is not covered under OHIP. Recently kinesiology has been proclaimed as a health profession in Ontario. This change protects you as there is an oversight body setting out the standards of the profession – The College of Kinesiologists of Ontario. This change has prompted some health care plans to begin to provide coverage. Look to see whether Registered Kinesiology is included in your benefits guide. If your injury is due to a car accident, you might also want to check your automobile insurance policy for coverage.
Do I need a doctor’s referral?
No, you do not need a doctor’s referral to be treated by a Kinesiologist however if you have a chronic health condition or if you are receiving treatment for cancer-related conditions it is best to let your physician know of your decision to use therapeutic fitness. This communication will help to ensure that all members of the team are aware of your physical status and restrictions throughout your recovery.
Some extended health benefit insurance plans require a doctor’s referral for you to be able to access your benefits. Be sure to check your benefits policy before you make your appointment, or give us a call and we will be happy to help you sort out what’s needed.
Can you bill my insurance company directly?
- We will provide an invoice for your insurer. We recommend you contact your insurer directly for more information on whether these services are covered.
